World Poker Tour's Plaza World Poker Classic

Plaza Hotel and CasinoBARRICK GAMING BRINGS MAJOR POKER TOURNAMENT BACK TO DOWNTOWN VEGAS WITH PLAZA WORLD POKER CLASSIC

LAS VEGAS—The Plaza Hotel and Casino announced today the “Plaza World Poker Classic,” a professional poker player’s tournament heading to Downtown Las Vegas this spring. The tournament begins Monday, April 18 and culminates Tuesday, May 17 after a two-day “No Limit Hold ‘Em” final with a $50,000 buy-in.

“A poker tournament of this level belongs in Downtown Las Vegas, and the Plaza Poker Room has the vintage distinction to pull it off in style,” said Phil Flaherty, C.O.O. of Barrick Gaming, the parent company of the Plaza.

“For many seasoned poker players taking the World Series of Poker away from Downtown Las Vegas and changing the date from a slot it filled for decades is sacrilege,” said Ben Magee, director of poker tournaments at the Plaza. “The caliber of the final table buy-in is going to present an opportunity for the pros to win millions and take this tournament to the level a major downtown tournament was meant to be.” Prior to joining the Plaza, Magee was the poker tournament director at Binion’s Horseshoe where, among his accomplishments, he was lead floor for the high limit section and satellite tournament director for the 2004 World Series of Poker.

Single table and super satellites begin April 18 with multiple buy-in amounts. No-Limit Hold ‘Em tournaments dominate the schedule, but an array of other tournaments such as Seven Card Stud, H.O.R.S.E., Ace to 5 Lowball and Omaha 8 or Better are also planned on select dates.

The Plaza World Poker Classic is another bold move on behalf of the Plaza and Barrick Gaming to make the Plaza Poker Room the home to Las Vegas poker since Magee joined the team. Other exciting events have included an innovative series of daily tournaments, “Holiday Hold ‘Em,” and the Plaza Ultimate Poker Challenge, which was syndicated nationwide.

Deals being made for two celebrity poker films

By Marilyn Beck and Stacey Jenel Smith

Celebrity poker players could be competing in theaters soon, not just at the tables.

While poker players Ben Affleck, David Schwimmer and William H. Macy are reportedly lined up to star in an untitled card comedy for moviemaker Zak Penn, Lou Diamond Phillips expects to be before the cameras this summer starring in his own poker movie, "Dead Money," which he wrote and will direct.

Phillips - who pops up on the May 11 season finale of the WB drama "Jack and Bobby," as the title characters' long-lost father - says "Dead Money" "is a family project for me. I'm asking friends to come in, and fortunately there are enough of them who have a poker passion as well, so they're happy to come and play for a little bit. I've got commitments from Camryn Manheim, Norm Macdonald and Meat Loaf so far."

As for poker buff Tobey Maguire, Phillips says, "I think Tobey likes to keep a low profile when it comes to his playing."
